A simple electric motor consists of a cylindrical armature with a coil around it. A battery feeds current into the coil and this produces a magnetic field around the it and so the armature became an electromagnet. The magnetic field interacts with the armature that generate a rotation. The commutator can change the direction of the current every half-turn. This component can reverse the north and the south poles of the armature and it create a rotation.
