Answer #1

Given U=2BW

B=2LB or LB=B/2

W=2LW or LW=W/2

Also LB+LW=20

So,

(B/2)+(W/2)=20

B+W=40

or 40-B-W=0

Now maximize U=2BW subject to 40-B-W=0

i.e.

L = 2BW - X(40 - B-W)

First order conditions give us

dL/dB = 2W -X=0

or = 21 ------(1)

dL/DW = 2B-X=0

= 2B ------(2)

From equation (1) and equation (2), we get

2W=2B

W=B

We know that B+W=40

Set W=B

B+B=40

B*=20

W*=B*=20

LB*=B/2=10

Lw*=W/2=10
