-A sample of kerosene weighs 36.4 g. Its volume was measured to be 45.6 mL. What is the density of kerosene?
-Acetone, the solvent in some nail polish removers, has a density of 0.791 g/mL. What is the volume of 16.4 g of acetone?

-A graduated cylinder was filled with water to the 19.1 mL mark and weighed on a balance. Its mass was 34.16 g. An object made of silver was placed in the cylinder and completely submerged in the water. The water level rose to 20.4 mL. When reweighed, the cylinder, water, and silver object had a total mass of 47.81 g. Calculate the density of silver in g/cm3.
Express your answer to two significant figures.

-Titanium is a metal used to make golf clubs. A rectangular bar of this metal measuring 1.92 cm x 2.07 cm x 2.63 cm was found to have a mass of 29.5 g. What is the density of titanium in g/cm3?

-Aerogel or "solid smoke" is a novel material that is made of silicon dioxide, like glass, but is a thousand times less dense than glass because it is extremely porous. Material scientists at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory created the lightest aerogel ever in 2002, with a density of 0.00011 pounds per cubic inch. The material was used for thermal insulation in the 2003 Mars Exploration Rover. If the maximum space for insulation in the spacecraft's hull was 2656 cm3, what mass (in grams) did the aerogel insulation add to the spacecraft?

Answer #1

1)

mass = 36.4 g

volume = 45.6 mL

use:

density = mass / volume

= 36.4 g / 45.6 mL

= 0.798 g/mL

Answer: 0.798 g/mL

2)

density = 0.791 g/mL

volume = 16.4 g

use:

density = mass / volume

0.791 g/mL = 16.4 g / volume

volume = 20.7 mL

Answer: 20.7 mL

3)

volume of object = difference in volume of water

= 20.4 mL - 19.1 mL

= 1.3 mL

= 1.3 cm^3

mass of object = different in mass

= 47.81 g - 34.16 g

= 13.65 g

use:

density = mass / volume

= 13.65 g / 1.3 cm^3

= 10.5 g/cm^3

Answer: 10 g/cm^3

4)

volume = 1.92 cm * 2.07 cm * 2.63 cm

= 10.45 cm^3

mass = 29.5 g

use:

density = mass / volume

= 29.5 g / 10.45 cm^3

= 2.82 g/cm^3

Answer: 2.82 g/cm^3
