World war II was devastating for American families. Nearly 292,000 soldiers were killed and their families sunk into grief forever. While the war was on, most of the labor force shifted towards production for war. This led to severe shortage of labor in industries. Consequently, women took over the roles which were reserved for men only. Hence, more and more women joined the workforce. Even high school dropout rates increased because teenagers left studies to take up waiting jobs. While the horizon of opportunities opened up, separation from fathers and sons left devastating effect - many felt that their childhood was robbed
During the onset of war, American economy was just recovering from the Great Depression. Significant population (25%) was still jobless. The war however changed the situation over night as the factories were re-tooled to produce for the war. Un-employment rate dropped drastically to less than 10% within days into war. The rapid technological developments and innovations during the war set the economy ahead of the world. Significant development in defense, aerospace, atomic and other war related industries pulled the economy out of the great depression
