Answer #1

Refractive index of a medium is given by

Velocity of light in vacuum velocity of light in the medium λvacuum λmediurn c v

For green light traveling through the soap

vacuum 1.31- soap

512 or.(oap g 1.31 nm- 390.84 nmm

The soap film will act as a half-wave plate and introduce a path difference of half the wavelength.

For the film to look red, the thickness of the soap must be half of the wavelength for green light i.e.,

t -(isoap)x84 x 10-9 m 1.95 x 10-7 m g 2

This is the thickness of the film.

Light of wavelength 541 nm (in vacuum) is incident perpendicularly on a soap film (n = 1.36) suspended in air. What are the two smallest nonzero film thicknesses (in nm) for which reflected light undergoes constructive interference? Let (a) be the smaller of the two values.

A child is playing with a bubble wand, which is a large rectangular wire frame that contains a soap film. The child holds the wand vertically, which causes the film to be thinner at the top and thicker at the bottom, forming a wedge shape. Assume a thickness of essentially zero at the top. White light shines on the film with approximately normal incidence. The child views the reflected light from the film and sees the first violet interference band...

A soap film (n = 1.33) is 498 nm thick and lies on a glass plate (n = 1.52). Sunlight, whose wavelengths (in vacuum) extend from 380 to 750 nm, travels through the air and strikes the film perpendicularly. For which wavelength(s) in this range does destructive interference cause the film to look dark in reflected light? To 3 significant figures
