  • Summary on Pythagoras:-
  • Pythagoras definitely did not discover the Pythagorean theorem, because the Babylonians, Egyptians, and Indians already knew about the theorem over a millennium before Pythagoras was even born. Furthermore, the legend claiming that Pythagoras discovered the theorem is not attested until the first century BC, nearly 500 years after Pythagoras’s death.
  • Modern scholars have typically seen the historical Pythagoras, not as a mathematician, but rather as a sort of mystic sage or spiritual guru who taught the doctrine of metempsychosis (i.e. reincarnation).
  • Pythagoras is most famous for his concept of geometry. It is believed that he was first to establish that the sum of the angles of a triangle is equal to two right angles and that for a right-angled triangle the square on the hypotenuse is equal to the sum of the squares on the other two sides.
  • Although the last mentioned theorem was already discovered by the Babylonians, Pythagoras was first to prove it. It is also believed that he devised the tetractys, the triangular figure of four rows which add up to ten, which according him, was the perfect number.
  • There was another interesting contribution that he made, he tried to convert the musical tones into mathematical equations. Though the conclusions that he made in this field were not so concrete and hence it was not accepted.
  • He went to the blacksmiths to learn how the sounds were produced by looking at their tools. He discovered that it was because the hammers were "simple ratios of each other, one was half the size of the first, another was 2/3 the size, and so on".This legend has since proven to be false by virtue of the fact that these ratios are only relevant to string length (such as the string of a monochord), and not to hammer weight. However, it may be that Pythagoras was indeed responsible for discovering the properties of string length.
  • The list of theorem attributed to Pythagoras, or rather more generally to the Pythagoreans are:
  • Properties of Triangle- The sum of the angles of a triangle is equal to two right angles.
  • Polygon Angles-Also the Pythagoras knew the generalization, which states that a polygon with n sides has sum of interior angles 2n-4 right angles and sum of exterior angles equal to four right angles.
  • Pythagoras theorem-for a right-angled triangle the square on the hypotenuse is equal to the sum of the squares on the other two sides. We should note here that to Pythagoras the square on the hypotenuse would certainly not be thought of as a number multiplied by itself, but rather as a geometrical squares is equal to a third square meant that the two squares could be cut up and reassembled to form a square identical to the third square. AB2+BC2=AC2
