Some of the callers on the show who said that they were not in favor of employees said that they didn't like things like the seniority system. This system was put into place to protect older employees against discriminatory treatment and was a gain achieved by unions. Some of the callers were also not in favor of tenure, which the unions also achieved in order to protect employees from unfair and wrongful termination. For this discussion, answer the following questions: Do you think the negative perception that many people in the United States have of unions is because people don't realize how things were at one time and the gains that we now take for granted (minimum wage, weekends off, for example)? Would losing these gains give a new perspective on unions? Next, consider the following: In Sweden and Norway, 60-70% of employees are unionized. In the United States, now 11% of employees are union members. Address the following questions: Why do you think that there is such a difference between the two countries? Why do you think the number in the States is so low?

The negative perception of Unions in the United States is beacuse the Unions are not as effective as government. The government has taken initiatives for welfare of workers in terms of health benefits, work environment, human rights and pensions. Because of the size of most of the companies in United States, the workers are often unaware of Union practices and any steps taken by them in interest of workers. Unions require certain monetary contributions from workers whereas companies link benefits to employee performance and the overall performance of the business. There is more openness by companies for interaction with workers and they do not require support of Unions to raise their concerns.

Losing these gains will not give a new perspective on Unions as there is lot of competitiveness in business and it is not certain that Unions can do much to reverse the loss of gains. Being a global workplace, unions cannot have much control in United States. Companies focus on healthy and safe work environment and welfare of workers to retain the skilled workforce so there will not be any drastic measures taken by companies to withdraw employee benefits.

There is difference between the two countries considering their size and economy. The industries in Sweden and Norway are more natural resources based. The taxes are high in Norway and Sweden with a goal of equal distribution of income in the society. United States is a diversified economy and a technology leader. These types of industries are competitive and growth oriented. They give good growth opportunities to employees and incentives for work performance which lowers the importance of Unions working for employee rights. Considering the history of Unions which have been involved in strikes and politics, employees do not favor Unionism. Increasing globalization and global work opportunities across globe has also led to the decline of Uunions.
