An UV-Vis spectrophotometer communicates with a computer using digital signal transmission. The number 100 is used to represent an absorbance of 100 mili absorbance units (mAU). Assume it takes 1.00 ns to transmit a single bit of data.

(a) How long does it take to transmit the number 100 in serial form?

(b) How long does it take to transmit the number 100 in parallel form using 8 wires?

(c) Give one advantage and one disadvantage of parallel digital signal transmission versus serial digital signal transmission.

Answer #1

The number 100 is represented in binary form as

01100100

Given, one bit takes 1ns to get transmitted from a wire.

(a)In serial form, all the bits have to transmit through same wire. So,each bit takes one 1ns to transmit.

Therefore,it takes 8ns for the number to get transmitted.

(b)In parallel form, each bit has its own wire and the bits can be transmitted at a time. Therefore,it takes just 1ns to transmit the number in parallel form.

(c)Serial form

Advantage: If there is any short communication error, just one or two bits of information is lost.

Disadvantage:The data transmission is slow.

Parallel form

Advantage:The data is transmitted fast.

Disadvantage:If there is any short communication error, all the data is lost.
