The coefficients of friction between a block of mass 1.5 kg and a surface are ?s = 0.60 and ?k = 0.40.  Assume the only other force acting on the block is that due to gravity.  What is the magnitude of the frictional force (in newtons) on the block if the block is at rest and the surface is inclined at 15o?  Use g = 9.79 m/s2.

Answer #1

the normal force of the plane on the block is
Fn = mgcos15
at rest, we use the coefficient of static friction
Ff = ?sFn
Ff = (0.60)1.5(9.79)cos15
Ff = 8.51 N

Answer #2

N= mg = 14.7N

friction force = (.4) * N*cos(15) = .4*14.7*.9659 = 5.68 N
