This new concept stems from Buddhist philosophy which considers feelings of personal inadequacy and suffering as something we all go through, and which emphasizes the importance of viewing oneself and others with compassion, particularly during difficult or stressful periods. This philosophy stands in direct contrast to the notion of eliminating all feelings of low self-esteem and setting perfectionisticor idealistic standards for ourselves.

After viewing the Ted Talk by Kristen Neff, entitled: "The Space Between Self-Esteem and Self-Compassion) and reading the article entitled: "Is Self-Compassion the New & Improved Self-Esteem?" discuss this new concept of self-esteem and the value of self-compassion

Answer #1

Most of the time, when people who undergo distressful situations in life would easily get despaired thus blame themselves and others for their present state. This means people don’t empathize with themselves and others in order to take responsibility and control of the situation they are in. Guilty feeling and blaming others would lead one to experience more remorseful feelings thus would force one to undergo painful episodes in one’s life. Accepting the pain and suffering without blaming the self and others would give one courage, resilience and perseverance to face the situation and clear their mind to think of solutions. So, compassion towards oneself and others would calm one down and provide one enough opportunities to think clearly and keep oneself in touch with the reality.
