2) By adding aqueous KOH to the mixture in dichloromethane (CH2Cl2), 4-methylbenzoic acid gets converted into the corresponding potassium salt i.e.- Potassium 4-methylbenzoate and being an ionic salt it gets transferred into the aqueous layer.
