Question

Relative Rates of Free Radical Bromination* Fig. 2. The hydrocarbons in todays experiment. Prelab Preparation Write the balanced equation for the reaction of each hydrocarbon (cyclohexane, methylcyclohexane, toluene, ethylbenzene, isopropylbenzene, and t-butylbenzene) with molecular bromine. Assume that only the most reactive hydrogen will be substituted and that each compound will react only once Use the relative reactivity of the different types of hydrogens discussed in the introduction to predict the order in which the hydrocarbons in todays experiment will react. Arrange them in a series with the fastest reacting hydrocarbon at the left and the slowest at the right.

Also, circulate the hydrogens to be replaced, and indicate the type: 3 °, 2 °, 1 ° or benzyl.

Add 2.0 mL of dichloromethane to each of four clean, dry, labeled 13 x 100-mm test tubes. To each test tube, add 0.50 mL of a different aromatic hydrocarbon--toluene, ethylbenzene, isopropylbenzene, or t-butylbenzene--and swirl to mix. Carefully add 0.50 mL of freshly prepared 1.0 M bromine in dichloromethane to each test tube, then stopper and shake it. Questions: 1) Arrange the four hydrocarbons in order of their reactivity toward bromine, most reactive first, and compare your results with your prediction...
