Consider the network depicted in the figure below. Both of the hosts H0 and H1 have two interfaces: one connected to the switch S0 and the other one to the switch S1. Will the link between S0 and S1 ever be used? If so, under which assumptions?

Let the interfaces on H0 be if0_1 (connected to S0) and if0_2 (connected to S1). For H1, let the interfaces be if1_1 (connected to S0) and if1_2 (connected to S1). The IP address of the 2 interfaces on each host is different. Then if if0_1 wants to send packet to if1_2, then the link between S0 and S1 will be used.

So, the link between S0 and S1 is used only under the assumption that the IP address of each interface is different and there are applications on both hosts that sends / receives IP network layer packets to or from interfaces connected to a different switch.
