Answer #1

Ans. Total Fe2O3 obtained = 456 mg = 0.456 g                           ; [1 g = 1000 mg]

Moles of Fe2O3 = Mass/ Molar mass

                                    = 0.456 g / (159.6922 g/mol)

                                    = 0.0028555 mol

Note that 1 mol Fe2O3 has 2 Fe-atoms. Thus, 1 mol Fe2O3 is equivalent to 2 mol Fe-atom.

So, moles of Fe-atom = 2 x moles of Fe2O3

= 2 x 0.0028555 mol

= 0.005711 mol

Total mass of Fe in 12 pills = Moles x Molar mass

                                    = 0.005711 mol x (55.847 g/mol)

                                    = 0.318942217 g

Mean Fe-content per pill = Total Fe-content / 12 pills

                                    = 0.318942217 g/ 12 pills

                                    = 0.0265785 g/pill

                                    = 26.58 mg/ pill

Thus, mean Fe-content = 26.58 mg/ pill

21 Twenty dietary iron tablets with a total mass of 20.131 g were ground and mixed thoroughly. Then 2.998 g of the powder were dissolved in HNO3 and heated to convert all the iron (FeSO4.7H20) to Fe2O3.XH20. Addition of NH3 precipitated Fe,O3.XH20, which was ignited to give 0.264 g of Fe2O3 (M.wt. = 159.69 g/mol). What is the average mass of FeSO4.7H20 (M.wt. = 278.01 g/mol) in each tablet? * (2 points)

    10. Write a one-page summary of the attached paper? INTRODUCTION Many problems can develop in activated sludge operation that adversely affect effluent quality with origins in the engineering, hydraulic and microbiological components of the process. The real "heart" of the activated sludge system is the development and maintenance of a mixed microbial culture (activated sludge) that treats wastewater and which can be managed. One definition of a wastewater treatment plant operator is a "bug farmer", one who controls the aeration...
