Consider the system of blocks in the figure below, with m2 = 4.9 kg and θ = 33°. If the coefficient of static friction between block #1 and the inclined plane is μS = 0.25, what is the largest mass m1 for which the blocks will remain at rest?

Answer #1

from the force diagram of mass m2 :

T = m2 g

T = 4.9 x 9.8 = 48.02 N

from the force diagram Perpendicular to incline for block 1 :

Fn = m1 g Cos33

from the force diagram parallel to incline for block 1 :

m1 > m2

T + f = m1 g Sin33

T + ?S m1 g Cos33 = m1 g Sin33

48.02 + (0.25) m1 (9.8) Cos33 = m1 (9.8) Sin33

m1 = 14.63 kg
