1. Mexican Americans in the 1960s.

Nearly 80000 thousand Mexicans became part of America and got American citizenship in 1847 when part of Mexico was Integrated with the US. The civil war in Mexico, in the 1910s caused more people who lived in the Mexican American border to move into the US. This happened until 1960s and mostly in California and Texas where you can still see predominant Mexican communities.

2. The American Mexicans however felt that they were not treated equally in terms of education, voting rights, civil rights etc. and this made them stage various protests. One of the famous protests came from a group called The Hispanic who differentiated themselves from the mainstream American (Anglican) society. This group was also later called Al Raza because they jointly worked with the Latino and Mexican communities.

Industrial workers of the world, a union that united the Mexican Americans and fought for the rights of the miners who formed the majority of the workforce in the 1960s.They staged various protests throughout the country on their own or with other nationals such as Japanese for better wages and work conditions.

United Farm Workers who fought for the welfare of the farm workers who struggled in unsafe and injust working conditions. Tejanos, a civil rights union comprising of the Mexican and Spanish communities fought for the social discriminations and one such union, League of United Latin American Citizens, is still active today. Although not all their protests succeeded, they set a strong foundation on which the present Mexican Americans thrive and enjoy their rights.

3. 1960s America witnessed several sea of changes and it is labelled as the age of Counter culture, Swinging Sixties and Individual's world. Counter culture stood against the traditional social conformity, giving room for individual freedom. This reflected in the society in terms of clothing, music, drug, sexuality etc. This age also witnessed great economical recession which John F. Kennedy promised to address. There were other natural disasters such as earthquakes and hurricanes. There was also social, political and civil rights reforms shaping up throughout America.
