When t = 1 hours then distance d = 70 miles and when t = 4 hours then d = 232 miles.

Therefore, average rate of change in distance ,i.e., average speed as t varies from hour 1 to hour 4 of the trip is =

(232-70)/(4-1) miles per hour

= 162/3 miles per hour

= 54 miles per hour
