International union of Pure and Applied Chemistry commonly know as IUPAC has given certain rules to systematize the nomenclature of organic compounds. The names based upon these rules are called IUPAC names and are most widely used. The IUPAC name of any organic compound can be derived by using the following rules:
A compound containing one carbon atom will be named after methane.
A compound containing two carbon atom will be named after ethane.
A compound containing three carbon atom will be named after propane.
A compound containing four carbon atom will be named after butane.
A compound containing five carbon atom will be named after pentane.
A compound containing six carbon atom will be named after hexane.
A compound containing seven carbon atom will be named after heptane.
A compound containing eight carbon atom will be named after octane.
A compound containing nine carbon atom will be named after nonane.
A compound containing ten carbon atom will be named after decane.
2. The functional group present in the organic compound is indicated either by a prefix or by a suffix.
A Prefix is a word which is added before the name of the compound as obtained in Step 1 and a suffix is a word which is added after the name of the compound as obtained in Step 1
For ex. We use chloro as prefix for chlorine and no suffix where as we use ol as suffix for alcohol and no prefix
NOTE: Chlorine and Alcohol are Functional groups.
3. If a suffix is to be added, the final ‘e’ from the name of the carbon chain is deleted.
4. If the carbon chain is unsaturated, the final ‘ane’from the name of the carbon chain is replaced from ene if the carbon chain contains one double bond or by yne if the carbon chain contains a triple bond.
5. The position of the functional group on the carbon chain is given by the lowest possible numerical prefix, i.e., 1,2,3,4…., etc.
