Answer #1

here,

the total distance of Detroit to Hawaii , s = 7211 Km

the south component of displacement vector , sy = 2333 km

a)

let the west component of displacement vector be sx

s = sqrt(sx^2 + sy^2)

7211 = sqrt(sx^2 + 2333^2)

solving for sx

sx= 6823 km

the west component of displacement vector is 6823 km

b)

the displacement vector , s = 6823 km (-i) + 2333 km (-j)

c)

the degree south of due West is Hawaii from Detroit , theta = arctan(2333/6823)

theta = 18.88 degree South of West
