Answer #1

The Huffs Law assigns probabilities of a shopper shopping at a certain location based on the time taken to visit the location and the area allocated to the category which is being shopped for. This is given by the formula

Pij = (Sj/Tij)/\sum S/T)

This can be applied to the data in the questions to calculate the probability of shopping and hence the expected number of shoppers in a given period.

1) The Denominator for the probability may be calculated as (10/200) + (30/650) + (120/2000) + (17/900) = 0.18

The answer hence for the data is given by the table below

Store A Store B Store C Store D
Drive Time 10 30 120 17
Sq Ft (Toys) 200 650 2000 900
Drive Time/ Sq Ft 0.05 0.05 0.06 0.02
% Shopping 29% 26% 34% 11%
Number 1428 1318 1714 540

2) We can apply the same principle to the data set in question 2 as well.

Denominator = (5/2350) + (20/54550) + (17/27600) = 0.0031

Here the potential customers are 8500 hence the percentage shopping is from this base

Store A Store B Store C
Drive Time 5 20 17
Sq Ft Area 2350 54550 27600
Drive Time/ Sq Ft 0.0021 0.0004 0.0006
% Shopping 68% 12% 20%
Number 5815 1002 1683

3) We apply the same principle. Here the Sq Ft Area is replaced by the population of the community as the factor positively affecting the propensity to shop in that location

The table given below

Russell Marion Midway
Drive Time 20 75 35
Population 47800 42500 200000
Drive Time/ Sq Ft 0.0004 0.0018 0.0002
% Shopping 18% 75% 7%
Number 2129 8980 891

    Can Technology Save Sears? Sears, Roebuck used to be the largest retailer in the United States, with sales representing 1 to 2 percent of the U.S. gross national product for almost 40 years after World War II. Since then, Sears has steadily lost ground to discounters such as Walmart and Target and to competitively priced specialty retailers such as Home Depot and Lowe’s. Even the merger with Kmart in 2005 to create Sears Holding Company failed to stop the downward...

    Please read the article and answer about questions. You and the Law Business and law are inseparable. For B-Money, the two predictably merged when he was negotiat- ing a deal for his tracks. At other times, the merger is unpredictable, like when your business faces an unexpected auto accident, product recall, or government regulation change. In either type of situation, when business owners know the law, they can better protect themselves and sometimes even avoid the problems completely. This chapter...
