Let tension in the cable of elevator = T

Now, as the elevator starts to move downward with an acceleration "a" , it means that weight is more than tension and hence the system is moving downwards.

Therefore, net force = weight - tension

ma = mg- T

T = mg - ma

T = m(g-a)

Now, this tension in the cable is the apparent weight of the person , which is clearly seen that this value is less than the original weight (mg).

Thus, The scale read less than your normal weight.
