The last 3 days you have had very difficult patients both physically and emotionally. You walk onto the unit to find you are assigned to care for Mr C. He has some superficial wounds on his legs, torso and arms requiring some dressing changes and intravenous antibiotics. You are unaware of the details of the crime and the brutality of the murders. During report you learn he is a 26 year old man accused of brutally stabbing his 23 year old wife and his elderly parents. He was apprehended after a daylong manhunt. An armed police officer is in his room and one stationed directly outside. He is due to be arraigned in his room today by the local authorities. The charge nurse makes you aware of the details of the crime based on the news. As you walk into his room you notice that he is hand cuffed to the bed, he is quiet, his eyes are down cast initially but looks up as you enter the room. His eyes are red from crying. He looks subdued and scared.

ANSWER 1.

MR. C is criminal according to news and he took in hospital so as per history might be that situation is quite awkward for me as a nurse, also having fear of aggression of that person while caring him as a patient.

there is also happen some error while caring like verbal error, written errors and communication problems.

feeling of fear because of his crime history, his hands cuffed so no any risk that he can be Harmful but still having little fear. feeling uncomfortable in communication regarding history of crime , how he taken here for care.

even during care feeling insecure what  if he will attack on caretaker ?sometimes without knowing actual reason or history on base of other's opinion psycological aspects affect more while proving care to that person.

barriers exist in developing therapeutic relation with person who is criminal

The therapeutic relationship is a purposeful, goal-directed relationship for advancement of the values, interests, and health outcomes of the client.

some vulnerable group like criminal, prostitute, who has been raped, behaviour and communication with those people during care is very important or nurses to develop therapeutic relationship..

barriers like:

Noice, new hospital environment, gender issues while giving history,fear of judgement,fear of bias in care etc.

Knowledge is most important for development of therapeutic relationship:

knowledge of interpersonal and developmental issues ,knowledge of diversity, knowledge of patient and illness.

self awareness, self knowledge ,empathy, awareness of boundries and ethical limitations.

it work in initial , working phase and resolution phase. take history ,assess need , implement plan and evaluate outcome.

communication with patient is effective part of therapeutic relationship.
