Please show all work labeled:

The weights of newborn children in the U.S. vary according to the normal distribution with mean 7.5 pounds and standard deviation 1.25 pounds. The government classifies a newborn as having low birth weight if the weight is less than 5.5 pounds. a) What is the probability that a baby chosen at random weighs less than 5.5 pounds at birth? b) You choose 10 babies at random. What is the probability that their average birth weight is less than 5.5 pounds?

Answer #1

Solution :

Given that ,

a) P(x < 5.5)

= P[(x - \mu ) / \sigma < (5.5 - 7.5) / 1.25]

= P(z < - 1.6)

Using z table,

= 0.0548

b) \mu\bar x = 7.5

\sigma\bar x = \sigma / \sqrt n = 1.25 / \sqrt 10 = 0.40

P(\bar x < 5.5 ) = P((\bar x - \mu \bar x ) / \sigma \bar x < (5.5 - 7.5) / 0.40)

= P(z < - 5)

Using z table

= 0

please answer question 4 and 5 Birth Weights in America The National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) keeps records of many health-related aspects of people, including the birth weights of all babies born in the United States The birth weight of a baby is related to its gestation period (the time between conception and birth). For a given gestation period, the birth weights can be approximated by a normal distribution. The means and standard deviations of the birth weights for...

Does second-hand smoke increase the risk of a low birthweight? A baby is considered have low birthweight if he/she weighs less than 5.5 pounds at birth. According to the National Center of Health Statistics, about 7.8% of all babies born in the U.S. are categorized as low birthweight. Suspecting that the national percentage is higher than 7.8%, researchers randomly select 1200 babies whose mothers had extensive exposure to second-hand smoke during pregnancy and find that 10.4% of the sampled babies...
