Question
  1. You look out the window of a small submersible. The window is spherically shaped with center of curvature C and radius of curvature r. Both the window and the ocean water have the same index of refraction, nw. You are located at the point labeled on the diagram above and there is some equipment behind you. You can see through the window, but it also acts as a mirror in which you can see the equipment behind you.
    1. What is the focal length of the mirror?
    1. Sketch a ray diagram for the image of the equipment formed by the mirror effect.
    1. Is the image formed by the mirror effect upright or inverted? Real or virtual? And larger or smaller than the equipment?
    1. You see a seahorse outside the window. Sketch the ray diagram for the position of the image formed by the seahorse.
    2. Is the image of the seahorse upright or inverted? Real or virtual? And larger or smaller than the equipment?Equipment Inside of Submarine 1 Air па Water ny Mw>na C Your eye PortEquipment 1 CWater Air na the hlwna с

Answer #1

a) The focal point is half of the radius of curvature,

f=r/2

b)

Equipment Cymru 54,444

c) Image is Inverted,real and small

d) Since the glass of the window has the same index as that of water, it is a one sided lens with no front side and it only bends in the way into air but there will be no bending when moving from water to glass because the glass water boundaries are at the same index. Since it is not a thin lens so thin lens rules can't be applied to the same. Now we can draw two rays simply based on the laws of refraction

watis ais ܘܒܝ owo na r sec eahorse

The ray towards C hits the lens at zero angle and would travel straight. The horizontal ray drawn above refracts at the water air interface at an unknown angle

e) Image is virtual,small,and upright
