A researcher is interested in the relationship between oral contraceptive (OC)
use and blood pressure in women. Suppose a sample of ten 35-to 39 year old
nonpregnant, premenopausal OC users who work in a company and have a mean
systolic blood pressure (SBP) of 132.86 mm Hg and sample standard deviation
of 15.34 mm Hg are identified. A sample of 21 nonpregnant, premenopausal,
non-OC users in the same age group are similarly identified who have mean
SBP of 127. 44 mm Hg and a sample standard deviation of 18.23 mm Hg. A
researcher assumes that the two groups are independent and normal will equal
variances.
1. Using the p-value, does the underlying mean difference in blood pressure
between the two groups differ from zero? Use the significance level =
0.05.
2. Compute a 95% confidence interval for the true mean difference in systolic
blood pressure (SBP) between 35 to 39 year old OC users and non-OC
users. Interpret this result.

Suppose that a researcher is interested in estimating the mean systolic blood pressure, u, of executives of major corporations. He plans to use the blood pressures of a random sample of executives of major corporations to estimate u. Assuming that the standard deviation of the population of systolic blood pressures of executives of major corporations is 25 mm Hg, what is the minimum sample size needed for the researcher to be 90% confident that his estimate is within 3 mm...

A researcher studying stress is interested in the blood pressure measurements of chief executive officers (CEOs) of major corporations. He believes that the mean systolic blood pressure, u, of CEOs of major corporations is more than 130 mm Hg, which is the value reported in a possibly outdated journal article. He plans to perform a statistical test. He measures the systolic blood pressures of a random sample of CEOs of major corporations and finds the mean of the sample to...

Blood pressure is a measure of the blood force against the walls of the arteries. Blood pressure that is consistently more than 140/90 mm Hg is considered high, but for people with diabetes, 130/80 mm Hg is considered high. Normal blood pressure is below 120/80 mm Hg. The larger value represents the pressure when the heart contracts and pushes blood out (systolic), and the smaller value is the lowest pressure when the heart relaxes between beats (diastolic). Consider a population...
