Regression Discontinuity design is a Quasi-Experimental research design in which participants are assigned to the program solely on the basis of a cutoff score (65 in our case) on a pre-program measure (the state standardized test). This is known as a threshold (65 marks). The threshold determines eligibility for participation in the program. For example, women above or below a certain age are eligible for participation in a health program or, students below a certain test score are enrolled in summer school classes. Those way above and way below the threshold are undoubtedly different, and the threshold criteria may well be correlated with the outcome, resulting in selection bias. However, those just either side of the threshold are not very different. Regression discontinuity is based on a comparison of the difference in average outcomes for these two groups.
