If ice were more dense than water, it would freeze and sink over and over until the entire lake was frozen. This would eliminate many aquatic organisms and produce a system with far fewer life forms in lakes which freeze periodically.

The water in contact with the freezing ice is cold and contains some of the salt excluded from the ice, so ICE is more dense than the warmer water below, and it sinks, mixing with the deeper water. ... There is no way for heat to escape from the deep water at the bottom, so it cannot freeze.
