a) From the case study, we come to know that Mr. Stan is patient of moderate dementia. In case of moderate dementia, there are certain changes started developing in the brain of patient. Due to this patient will have difficulty in performing daily tasks or difficulty in expressing thoughts. I think Mr. Stan is unable to express his thoughts or feelings or he may be trying to memorize something but he has dementia so that may be get confused and angry. To calm down him, first of all one should try to reduce potential trigger it may be due to increased sound of television. So first thing one has to do is either switch off the tv or lower the volume of tv. Second thing, In gentle tone and by using caring words try to make him calm down and make him seat by gently holding his shoulder. Then tell him to take a long breath which will help to reduce his anger. Third thing is try to creat calm environment.
b) To settle this situation, first of all you need to calm down Mr. Stan. Give him water to drink and give some time to relax. Make him to feel comfortable. After that in gentle tone try to communicate with him. If he is not in mood to talk or share just redirect his attention towards different things or play his favourite music. Prepare the drink he likes the most it may be coffee, tea or juice. After settling him call the doctor who is Geriatric psychiatrist or a neurologist to report this incident or manage speech therapy consulting with doctor for Mr. Stan.
