The women's movement was temporarily stifled in the 1950's. Who played a major role in its recovery and how did she accomplish this? What major gains did the women's movement make in the 1960's and why were they significant?

Two of the most important works that brought out the importance of freedom and rights for women, especially self-expression without the control of men came from Simone Di Beauvoir’s the Second Sex and Betty Friedan’s The Feminine Mystique. Both the works brought out the struggles of women which limited them from functioning effectively at home, in the society and at the workplace, while also the inequality women faced in the society in terms of managing her body, abortion etc. Both these writers along with Gloria Steinem, Germaine Greer, Bell Hooks paved the way for the second wave feminism in which many ordinary or middle-class women participated. The civil Rights Movements were also a great inspiration to the success of the women’s movement. The success of second wave feminism led women to a new era that transformed the whole world or at least the developed nations to next level of individual rights and increased social welfare for women.
