SMED means single minute exchange of dies. It means reduce the setup time dramatically during changing of manufacturing from one product to another product. It has following steps to minimize the setup time:
1. Do the pilot study: It includes equipment selection, team member selection, and set the time for accomplishing the certain activity.
2. List all the activities: Do a video of the entire process and list all individual activities and the duration to accomplish it
3. Categorise the activities: The individual activities need to be categorise into two groups’ i.e external and internal activities.
4. Convert the internal to external activities: It is very much essential to reduce the external time in the production area. Because the value of external time is very high.
5. Systematically arrange the remaining activities.
In this way the setup time / change over time can be reducible up to great extent.
