essay on gender and sexuality for sociology
For a long time, society was guided by patriarchal values that determined the gender roles with the help of the religions and cultures they created. All the ideas of patriarchy regarding gender were built into the cultural norms and religious scriptures thus, making them irrefutable. While men were expected to provide and protect their families, women were expected to do the household tasks, take care of the children and their husbands. Women were treated as sexual pleasure centers and child bearing machines and society allowed men to express their sexuality openly while prevented women from talking about sex. Those women who talked about sex and expressed their sexuality were considered as characterless. However, women in individualistic societies in the western world fought his inequality and won their rights to education, employment, housing, healthcare, politics, sexuality etc. while women in the collective cultures continue to experience this inequality. It doesn’t mean that women in individualistic cultures are as equal as men because there still exists, wage gaps and differential treatment for men and women for the same job. Besides, not many women are seen in the political sphere as it is still dominated by men. Nevertheless, the society has come a long way in achieving what women and men have in terms of opportunities and rights and as time goes by things would become better.
