The attachment shown carries a static bending load of 12 kN. The length of attachment, l1 = 225 mm. The other dimensions are as shown on figure Q-2 below. Allowable shear stress on weldment is tall = 120 MPa. Both column and attachment are made of AISI 1030 HR steel. A minimum factor of safety for the joint n = 1.5 is required. Among several possible weld patterns, we are asked to decide on one of the two patterns (i) and (ii) as described below.

  1. Determine whether the materials are going to satisfy the required safety condition. [10 pts.]
  2. Choose the pattern that you consider more approprate, and explain your decision by showing why it is better for the task.                                                                             [20 pts.]
  3. Determe the safr weld size h (rounding it to the nearest mm).                                   [10 pts.]
