Provincial labour laws typically do not cover individuals who are self-employed. Should labour laws be changed to allow self-employed individuals to become union members? If so, what could the benefits be and why?
Yes, in my opinion labour laws should be changed to allow self-employed individuals to become union members because these individuals do not get any benefits and are also exploited by their clients or partners since they have smaller bargaining power and have to abide by the terms and conditions set by their clients and partners. This results in very less control in the hands of these self employed individuals. This necessitates them to become union members so that they get all the benefits and other such dues which they deserve without being burdened by the influence of other parties with whom they are associated. Also they would be properly regulated and controlled in a better manner once they join union which ultimately will help them to have a better work life balance and better bargaining power as well.

One example occurred when the SEIU had difficulty in organizing office cleaners who were primarily women and immigrants. When the union organizer learned that many office buildings were financed by large pension funds, he persuaded one pension fund to insert a “responsible contractor” clause into each financing policy, and then in one fast way, organized all the office cleaners. Is this a “fair labour practice”? Why or...
