From the definitionv_{CM} = \frac{p}{M}.v_{CM} is the center of mass velocity which according to our problem is v. pis the total momentum of the system which we are interested to find. M is the total mass of the system, M = m_1 + m_2. So, p = V_{CM} \cdot M = v \cdot (m_1 + m_2).
