When a bactericide was added to a nutrient broth in which bacteriawere growing, the bacterium population continued to grow for awhile but then stopped growing and began to decline. The size ofthe population at time (t) hours was b(t) = 10^6 + (10^4)t -(10^3)t^2. I need to find the growth rates at t=0, t=5, andt=10 hours.

Answer #1
b(t) = 10^6 + (10^4)t - (10^3)t^2

take the derivative:

So growth rate at t = 0

   (answer)

Growth rate at t = 5

    (answer)

Growth rate at t = 10

Growth of Bacteria The growth rate of Escherichia coli, a common bacterium found in the human intestine, is proportional to its size. Under ideal laboratory conditions, when this bacterium is grown in a nutrient broth medium, the number of cells in a culture doubles approximately every 20 min. (a) If the initial population is 20, determine the function Q(t) that expresses the growth of the number of cells of this bacterium as a function of time t (in minutes). (b) How long would...

Populations grow when the number of births in a population is greater than the number of deaths in the same population and there is no net movement of individuals into or out of the population. This is to say that all else being equal, populations grow when the birth rate exceeds the death rate and shrink when death rates exceed birth rates. When the number of births is equal to the number of deaths in a population, and again, there...
