Preferred GAAP method for handling uncollectible accounts receivable is Allowance method. Allowance method makes use of the matching principle of the accounting, so it is preferred over the direct write off method. Under the allowance method, a certain percentage of accounts receivables is estimated to be uncollectible. This amount then is charged againstb the revenues of the period. So, in this way accrual and mathcing concepts are followed. Later on when the accounts become uncollectible, these are charged against the allowance account.
