Explain why isostructural HfO2 and ZrO2 have densities of 9.68 g cm−3 and 5.73 g cm−3, respectively.
Atomic mass of Hf is 178.5 amu where as atomic mass of Zr is only 91.2 amu. If both are having same structure then same number of atoms present in unit cell for both the compounds.
Density = mass/volume
Size of Hf and Zr is almost same due to lanthanide contraction. So volume of both the unit cells are same, but the mass of unit cell of HfO2 greater than mass of unit cell of ZrO2 as Hf has greater atomic mass than Zr.
Hence HfO2 more dense compound when compare with ZrO2.
