Answer 1
Measurement technique for co2 pollutant
A natural gas burner has been used as a precise and accurate source for generating large quantities of carbon dioxide (CO2) to evaluate emissions measurements at near-industrial scale. Two methods for determining carbon dioxide emissions from stationary sources are considered here: predicting emissions based on fuel consumption measurements-predicted emissions measurements, and direct measurement of emissions quantities in the flue gas-direct emissions measurements. Uncertainty for the predicted emissions measurement was estimated at less than 1%. Uncertainty estimates for the direct emissions measurement of carbon dioxide were on the order of ±4%. The relative difference between the direct emissions measurements and the predicted emissions measurements was within the range of the measurement uncertainty, therefore demonstrating good agreement. The study demonstrates how independent methods are used to validate source emissions measurements, while also demonstrating how a fire research facility can be used as a precision test-bed to evaluate and improve carbon dioxide emissions measurements from stationary sources.

2 Pollution Control There are three coal plants, currently emitting 120 units of coal emissions. The government determines they wish to cut emission in half to 60 units total across the three plants. Each plant has their own total control C costs for emissions: TC and marginal costs of: gi MC where q is the amount of emissions reduced per plant. 1. The gove nment requires each plants to reduce emissions by 20 units to achieve the new standard. What...
Suppose gasoline has an emissions factor of 92g of CO2/MJ and costs $1.78/liter, and biodiesel has an emissions factor of 54g of CO2/MJ and costs $2.05/liter. You may assume gasoline and biodiesel both have energy densities of 38 MJ/liter. What is the cost of mitigating CO2 by switching from gasoline to biodiesel, in dollars per kilogram of CO2 emissions prevented? We'll cover how to do calculations like this in the course, so don't worry if you struggle. Give it your...

Carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions are widely believed to be a driver of global climate change. In this problem set you will use cross-section data to test what drives countries’ “carbon footprints,” that is, their CO2 emissions. Is it population, or is income the bigger culprit? The data set “CO2 by country 2010 sh S17” contains data on a sample of countries’ CO2 emissions, in kilotons; population, in millions; and gross national income (GNI), in millions of US dollars, for the...
