Question

A diamagnetic atom or ion has no unpaired electrons in any of its orbitals, whereas a paramagnetic atom or ion has at least one unpaired electron in its orbitals. The more unpaired electrons, the more paramagnetic the atom or ion. What is the ground-state electron configuration for the V3 ion and is it paramagnetic or diamagnetic? [Ar] 4s 3d05s diamagnetic O [Kr] 5s, paramagnetic [Ar]4s 3d, paramagnetic [Ar] 4s, diamagnetic [Ar] 3d, paramagnetic

Answer #1

The ground state electronic configuration of Vanadium is Ar [4s2] [ 3d3] So, losing three electrons from its outermost shells, the configuration V3+ is Ar [4s0] [ 3d2] which is same as Ar [3d2]. Now, in the 3d orbital there are 2 unpaired electrons. Therefore the V3+ ion is paramagnetic.

The answer is the last option.

d orbital filling:

maximum electrons capacity = 10

Each gets filled with one electron each and then from the 6th electron they get paired.
