What is the relationship between the arrival of an action potential (nerve impulse) at the axon terminal and exocytosis of neurotransmitters?

Action potential at the axon terminal of the presynaptic neuron triggers the calcium ion to flow inside the presynaptic neuron which are present in higher concentration in the synaptic cleft (space between presynaptic and postsynaptic neuron). The influx of Ca+ion occurs by activating the voltage gated calcium ion channel due to action potential, and thus influx of calcium ion allows to fuse the synaptic vesicles in the cell membrane of presynaptic neuron and by the process of exocytosis the neurotransmitter are released from the synatic vesicles in the synaptic cleft. These neurotransmitter binds to the receptor protein present in the postsynaptic membrane which leads to opening or closing of ion channels in the cell membrane that causes depolarisation or hyperpolarisation of the cell according to the influx or efflux of negative or positive ion inside or outside of the cell membrane.
