5.26 Compute the length of a GRIN rod lens that collimates light coming from a point source placed at one end of the rod. TheNo idea how to do this problem, help please! Thanks!

GRIN is graded-index optical fibres which are used to collimate light.

Pitch is one complete wave packet inside the fiber.

Quarter Pitch is 1/4 th of the length of the pitch. As you can see in the picture below. It is up to the blue line. So the light goes straight if the lens is of this length.

Here, r is the radius of the lens = half of diameter (2 mm) = 1 mm

\Delta is the fractional refractive index change = 0.005

Putting the values in the formula,

P = *(1) 2 4 V 0.005

P = 15.7079 mm
