Question
Can someone help me with this physics problem?
Two steel wires are connected together, end to end, and attached to a wall as shown below. The two wires have the same length and elastic modulus, but the ratio of the radius of the first wire to the radius of the second wire is 9:2. As the wi with the connection point. An applied force then stretches t wires stay connected together. After the wires are the connection point? res are initially the same length, the midpoint of the combination coincides stretched, what is δ, the distance from the midpoint to Number 8 3.98 Incorrect.

Answer #1

The thicker wire stretches less. Let's say it stretches "d" and the thinner wire stretches "D."

d + D = 4.050 mm

and D = d*(9/2)² = 20.25 *d

so

d + 20.25d = 21.25d = 4.050 mm

d = 0.1906 mm

D = 3.859 mm

Let's say each was originally length L. The total length is 2L + 4.050mm, and so the midpoint is now L + 2.025mm from each end.

But the connection point is only L + 0.1906 mm from one of the ends, so

δ = (2.025 – 0.1906)mm = 1.83 mm
