Firms that use geocentric or ethnocentric staffing policies face the expensive prospect of using expatriates. The failure of an expatriate to live up to expectations can cost the firm several times the annual salary. Firms need to take care to ensure expatriates' success.

The use of expatriate managers—and staffing policy in general—can be a source of competitive advantage for international businesses.
