when cannon is unbolted, then speed of shell is Vs and recoil speed of cannon is Vc.

then using momentum conservation,

0 = (5.60 x 10^3) Vc - (82.5 x Vs)

Vs = 67.88Vc


then, initial KE = final KE

82.5 x 550^2 /2 = [ (5.60 x 10^3) x Vc^2 /2 ) +   82.5 x Vs^2 /2 ]

24956250 = 5600(Vs/67.88)^2 + 82.5Vs^2


Vs = 546 m/s .......speed of shell
