Since there is 1.3 A through the 12Ω R, its voltage is 15.6volts. Add this to the 75 to get 90.6 volts across the rightside of this. It isconvention that the current flows from +to - in a battery, which is the case here. so the voltage of the Radds to the voltage source.
Since there is 90.6 V across 48Ω - that current is1.888 Amps. So, the current in the other leg must be -.5888.Let's look carefully atthe direction of this current.We know that the net leaving the right side is 1.3, and that1.88 comes down the left arm. That means that.588 goes upthe right arm. That is into - and out of + on thebattery so its polarity is good.
.588 A * 15Ω = 8.813 volts. Since the totalvoltage on this leg is 15.6, the battery must be 6.788 volts.
