A researcher is checking to see if a diet works. They will look at a sample of 100 and assume ? = 12. If they are testing H0 : µ = 150 against H1 : µ < 150 at the 1% level, then:

a) find the critical values that give a rejection test:

b)  find the power of the test if the real mean is 146.

For part A, I got 147.204 and for part B, I got that power is .8413. However, I was unsure of whether or not I did these questions properly.

7.9 Wood et. al (1988) studied the efficacy of diet for losing weight. The study, which lasted one year, involved only men. The weight loss for dieting men follows a normal distribution with mean µ and standard deviation σ. A group of n = 16 dieting men lost an average of ¯x = 7.2 pounds with standard deviation s = 4.4 pounds. This problem will highlight the fact that a one-sided test has more statistical power than a two-sided test....
