Answer #1

Given

mass of gift m1 = 3 kg , positioned at 0.7 m

meter stick to pivot at its center of mass is at 0.5 m mark

another mass is m2 = 2 kg , its position is x2 = ?

we know that the position of center of mass is X_CM = m1*x1+m2*x2 /(m1+m2)

given X_cm = 0.5 m

so

0.5 = (3*0.7+2*x2)/(3+2)

so x2 = 0.2 m

that is the mass of 2kg should be placed at 20 cm mark to balance the system
