A raft with an area of 16m^2 floats in a sea of fresh water. A seal of 132kg slides on top of the raft. How far does the raft sink into the water due to the seal? (Answer: 8.25X10^-3m)

Answer #1

Suppose raft sinks h height more due to weight.

increase in pressure due to weight = mg/A
it should be equal to rho x g x h

132g/16 = 1000g(h)

h = 8.25 x 10-3 m. Answer

    Groundwater Let us assume that the water table on the island is 2 m above sea level. Then, t 2 m, so 2 m/0.03-h 66.67 m. Thus we can predict that if we drill a hole on the island we would not come to salty groundwater for approximately 67+ 2 meters, or about 69 m from the top of the water table. This would be 67 m below sea level. a] Suppose you found a place on the island where...

    An ice cube floats in a beaker of ice cold water. Since the water is ice cold, the ice cube is not melting and hence its volume is not changing. 2. *D1* Salt water is plentiful on earth; natural supplies of fresh water, on the other hand, are dwindling while mankind's demands grow. One appealing solution to this imbalance is to remove the salt from ocean water by some means. Here you will investigate the energy input that is necessary to accomplish this task. Special membranes can be manufactured that allow water, but not ions, to pass through. By pushing such a membrane through salt solution, one can separate salt...
