Imagine sitting in class on a warm spring day. You’re trying to pay attention, but your mind keeps wandering off, as you think about last weekend’s amazing concert. In the distance, you hear your professor say something about a “group project.”

Suddenly you sit up straight and start paying close attention. Your professor wants you to work with four other students to critique management practices at a company of your choice. Fortunately, you have four close friends in class. You’ve worked together before, and you’re sure they will work with you again.

Before you know it, you’re sitting in the campus coffee shop, talking about the project with your four friends. Use the Management Decision Information and the Decision Process Flowchart to help you fill out the table and determine how you will make your decision.

To use the decision process flow chart, review the “Management Decision Information,” then choose “Low” or “High” for the Quality Requirement (QR) decision point in the flow chart. Make a choice at the end of each line until you reach the recommended decision-making style at the end of the chart.

Some of the students in class think that it doesn’t matter what company they choose for their projects, as long as they choose a big corporation. But you know that different companies have very different amounts of information available to the public and that choosing the right company is critical to your project’s success.

You’ve been on teams where people sit back and do nothing, and you want to make sure that doesn’t happen here. Your teammates have to believe in the project as much as you do.

You’ve done some research, and you have all the information you need to choose a company by yourself if you have to.

Your professor has given you some very specific rules for selecting your company. There is a right way and a wrong way to approach this problem.

You could choose the company by yourself, but you’re afraid that if you do, people on the team will expect you to do all the work on the project.

Fortunately, you and your friends all want the same thing: to get an A in the class.

Thank goodness your team doesn’t have the drama of some of the other teams in the class. While other teams try to resolve their petty squabbles, everyone on your team likes and respects everyone else.

Fortunately, everyone in the group did a little research before getting together at the coffee shop today. There are a lot of ideas and opinions to share!

If the quality requirement is high, then the commitment requirement also needs to be high, and the leader's information on the management decision needs to be high, then the commitment probability should be low and subordinate conflict should be low. With goal congruence and subordinate information high, the management decision for individual and group conflicts can be eradicated.
