First Normal Form (1NF):
If a relation contains a multi-valued attribute, it violates the first normal form.

A relation is in first normal form if it does not contain any composite or multi-valued attribute. A relation is in first normal form if every attribute in that relation is singled valued attribute.

1NF if:

  1. There are only Single Valued Attributes.
  2. There is a unique name for every Attribute/Column.

Let's talk about the example given:

  • structure of the relation is given here since each column name is unique. so clearly it obeys the property of the table.
  • But Dlocations attribute contains multi values in a single cell, that violates the 1NF rule, hence table (b) is not in 1NF form.
  • where as table (c) contains redundant data but it is in 1NF. If we convert the relation (b) into 1NF we get relatin (c)
